Be Nice

Thank you Kid President! I concur. My mom taught me “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. I bet yours did, too. If we are all on the same page, we aspire to be nice in everything we do. We aspire to perform acts of kindness on a daily basis. We endeavor to make the world a better place by doing nice things for others.

How about we try to “be nice” by an act of omission? I’m not asking that we DO SOMETHING, I’m asking that we NOT do something. More specifically, let’s NOT say that thing that we want to say but know we probably shouldn’t. Let’s think before we speak (or post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram…).

We should ask ourselves these basic questions before we say something that can’t be taken back:

T- is it true?

H- is it helpful?

I- is it inspiring?

N- is it necessary?

K- is it kind?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, we can save our breath. Save our time. Save our energy. If we accept this challenge 5 things will happen.

  1. We will prevent hurting someone’s feelings.
  2. We  will appear more intelligent.
  3. Our attitude will improve.
  4. Our relationships will improve.
  5. We won’t look like a jerk.

Mark Twain said, “better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, than open it and remove all doubt”. Benjamin Franklin said, “Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment”.  Kid President said, “Nothing- sometimes that’s the best thing you you can say”.

Trust me, I know how hard this can be. In a pinch, we can always refer to Kid President’s list of things we should say more often.

Be a blessing today.

Give Thanks

Ahhhh November… just when I thought October was my favorite, here you come again. How quickly I am reminded that I love YOU the most! Maybe it’s because October betrayed me with unseasonably warm weather and I need to wear boots and sweaters. I need to feel crisp cool air. I need it to be cool enough for bonfires and s’mores!

All joking aside, I think I love November the most because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday (spoiler alert: next month I might decide that Christmas is my favorite- a girl can change her mind). What could be better than an entire holiday devoted to being thankful? An entire MONTH devoted to being thankful!  So many days we wake up, open our eyes and start our day forgetting how abundantly blessed we are, right? Not in November. Let’s make a pact to be thankful every single day this month.

I believe that “thankful” and “generous” must be cousins. Or maybe sisters. Or husband and wife. You see where I’m going with this… November reminds me how thankful I am for every.single.thing. When I am mindful of how much I have to be thankful for, how can I not be generous every.single.day?

If I can be ONE thing when I open my eyes each morning, let me be THANKFUL! Let’s enter into this season of ThanksGIVING together with a desire to GIVE cheerfully, GIVE abundantly and GIVE like never before!

I am so thankful for you. Be a blessing today.
